For decades, polls have shown that women as a group vote differently than men. Without the women's vote, Republicans would have swept every presidential race but one between 1968 and 2004.
Lott is also the author of Freedomnomics, a critical response to Freakonomics that's absolutely delightful. Find out why price gouging is OK, why campaign finance reform makes political race less competitive . . . and more!

I wonder how and if this is related to the fact that our libertarian club (and from what I understand, pretty much all others) are basically sausage parties.
The number of female regular members over the last 5 years or so can be counted on one hand - you, Casey, Amy, maybe one or two others who show up occasionally).
Meanwhile, the club has maintained a steady membership of a dozen or so men at any given time.
I think socialism in theory is a warm, fuzzy and stereotypically feminine philosophy. Let's all work together, caring and sharing.
Whereas capitalism depends on competition, ambition and ruthless self-interest.
This may be why bleeding-heart liberal men usually seem effeminate in kind of a jarring way. Even the liberal girls I knew in college wanted to date right-wing guys!
In practice, of course, capitalism leads to incredible prosperity and peaceful cooperation between people who want to sell things to each other. But you have to look beneath the surface to discover that.
I'm afraid I don't buy your theory, Clara.
If it were true that women eschewed effete statists in favor of ruggedly handsome individualists, then we libertarians of the male persuasion would be getting more action than anyone on campus. This is apparently not the case.
